Kenilworth Road home a Victorian fashion statement
Valerie Shanley

THE grand Victorian residences of Kenilworth Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6, are among the 'supermodels' of the capital's period architecture, with tall ceilings, good proportions and very fine features.

No 29 doesn't disappoint, a fact immediately evident on entering the elegant reception hall with its ornate plaster cornice, centre rose, decorative arch, picture and dado rails all defining the generous space.

Leading from this are two equally well-proportioned formal rooms which interconnect through original panelled double doors. Period features in these rooms echo that of the hall, while antique fireplaces act as focal points, and natural light streams in through the high, shuttered sash windows. The well fitted kitchen-cumbreakfast area also has a castiron, gas-fuelled stove, bringing a homely, welcoming feel to this large room. An equally well-fitted utility and a guest cloakroom complete the rooms at entrance level.

This is a large home by modern standards, with over 189sq m (2,035sq ft) of floor space, extending to four double bedrooms upstairs. The landing has a stained-glass window, which also flows light down through the hallway.

Ornate ceiling plaster work is a feature of the master bedroom, overlooking the rear garden, and which has an ensuite. Double, built-in wardrobes are a feature of all rooms.

The very large front garden is a feature of the houses on this terrace, bounded by castiron railings, gravelled and with parking space for up to three cars. A side entrance leads to the very tranquil, sheltered rear garden which is filled with sun all day long. A raised patio is next to the house, while the space is mostly laid in lawn. Pedestrian access from the garden to Ashbrook Tennis Club enhances the genteel feeling of a lifestyle of days gone by.
