Harchibald to silence critics in Tipperary
Claire Barry

THE Noel Meade-trained Harchibald makes his seasonal reappearance at Tipperary this afternoon in the Grade 2 Tipperary Hurdle, a race he won last year when it was known as the John James McManus Memorial Hurdle.

Promoted as Tipperary's 'Super Sunday' fixture, the meeting offers an attractive mixed card, with six graded races up for decision, but Harchibald promises to be the main attraction as he bids to silence his critics once again.

A fortunate winner of this race last year, when he was left in front by the fall of Solerina at the final flight, Harchibald proved that was no fluke by following up with a convincing victory in the Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Unfortunately injury prevented him contesting the Smurfit Champion Hurdle, which means that he has been sidelined since chasing home Brave Inca in the December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown. Despite that lengthy absence he is still awarded a vote of confidence here to see off his five rivals.

Tom Hogan's German import Kalderon will be a warm order to follow up his hurdle win at Listowel with further success in the Kevin McManus Bookmaker Joe Mac Novice Hurdle, but he won't have matters all his own way with the likes of Footy Facts, Earth Magic and fellow Listowel scorer Jubilant Note in the line-up.

Paul Nolan's Galway Hurdle victor Cuan Na Grai adds further strength to the opposition, but he is unlikely to be suited by the yielding to soft ground, and is therefore passed over in favour of Kalderon.

With Kieren Fallon on duty at Longchamp, Seamus Heffernan, his second in command at Ballydoyle, has a good chance of collecting with Chinese Whisper in the listed El Gran Senor Stakes.

In the Group 3 Coolmore Stud Home Of Champions Concorde Stakes, preference is for Johnny Murtagh's mount Jazz Princess, from the Michael Halford stable.

The four-year-old was successful in the Athasi Stakes at the Curragh earlier in the season, but has been absent since filling the runner-up spot in the Ridgewood Pearl Stakes at the same venue in late May.

Nevertheless, Halford, has his string in top form, and with the soft ground very much in her favour, Jazz Princess is nominated to oblige at the expense of Ugo Fire and the mud-loving topweight Common World.
