HACKING IT ROUND

YOUNG BOGGAN SHOWS STRIKING FORM Westport holds no attractions for 16-year-old Ciaran Boggan who has just turned down a gol"ng holiday there with his parents to concentrate on serious competition at home in Meath.

Young Boggan is a rabid Tiger fan and more than a cub himself after a great summer which has seen him bring his handicap down from 10 to 6 on the back of a series of great showings at County Meath Golf Club.

He had the best score in the president's prize but was denied the top prize on the basis of the widely applied juvenile limitation rule; but there was no stopping him last weekend as he scored 43 points to win by seven from Jimmy Heggarty.

MOUNTRATH DUNPHYS KEEP UP THE NUMBERS It would be interesting to know what Irish family holds the record for most active golfers. The Dunphys of Mountrath have to be contenders for the crown.

No fewer than eight brothers and two sisters play golf and play it well as evidenced by results in last weekend's mixed foursomes.

Pascal Dunphy (5) and his wife Ber (19) had a 70 to win by half-astroke from Pascal's brother and sister, Brian (14) and Maria (13).

STANLEY STAYS JUST A STEP AHEAD, FOR NOW St Margaret's professional John Kelly is himself somewhat mesmerised by the results of his hi-tech coaching of Michael Stanley and Adam Mooney.

Recent events suggest that he may have produced twin monsters. Consider the intrepid Mooney playing in the president's (Tom Giblin) prize and becoming increasingly neurotic when "nding his bid for the nearest-the-pin beaten by inches by Stanley, his bid for the longest drive being beaten by inches by Stanley, and his magni"cent return of 44 points being beaten by just one by the same Stanley!

Stanley, who was the "rst winner of a captain's prize at Carton House a few years ago, was around in two-under-par and needed to be as Mooney birdied the 11th, 12th, 13th and 17th for a great but just not good enough 25 points home. Worthy of mention, too, is Una Martin who won the ladies' prize and did a Stanley on it by winning the nearest-the-pin and long-drive also.

PURTILL SHOWS WHERE THE SON GOT HIS SKILLS Confusion could have been forgiven at Shannon when the name Purtill cropped up as the winner of the weekly seniors event. How could Senior Cup player Gary Purtill, whose stellar golf would be capable of 47 points, be playing with the oldtimers? Then it became clear that it was his father, the popular Martin, who had set the place alight when scoring pars at 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 18!

Great going for an 18handicapper who showed where his son's talents came from.

NEWMAN HITS A GLORIOUS VEIN OF FORM Gol"ng form is glorious. Ask Linda Newman (20) who has been setting the place alight at Malahide by reaching the "nals of the Club Fourball and Club Foursomes, with partners Aileen Conlon and Ciara Smyth, and by winning the weekly competition by a margin of eight points. These are happy days for the girls at Malahide as they have assembled their "rst ever Senior Cup team consisting of Maida McGowan, Sally Casey, Amy Irwin, Rosemary Byrne, Lily Owens and Olive Shannon with Lorna Kinder as manager. That team would be greatly strengthened if Alison Taylor were available to play. She has just become golfer of the year and reduced her handicap to 1 but she plays for Laytown-Bettystown.

AIDAN IS THE TOP PHOTOGRAPHER Oops, our apologies to California-based photographer Aidan Bradley who, due to gremlins in our system, appeared as 'Alan' in our article last week. Aidan's pictures can be viewed at www.
