ATthe end of a thrilling sundrenched week in the Algarve, the Leinster Men's Champion Mark Talbot (Ashbourne) and the Ulster Ladies Champion Carol McEnroe (Slieve Russell) came out tops in the third Sunday Tribune Golfsure Personal All-Ireland Club single finals.
McEnroe, with 106 points, had five points to spare over Sally Casey (Seapoint) with Clare Endersen (Bantry Bay) on 97 points and Aoife Fitzpatrick (Loughrea) a point further back on 96. Casey (8) made a valiant effort on the final day over a very demanding Penina course to shoot 37 points that equalled the best score from the ladies section during the week.
In the men's section, steady golf from Talbot with 99 points led the way from Bantry Bay's John O'Sullivan on 94 with Holywood's James Mooney a further point back on 93 points.
The Lady Honorary officer's title went to the lady captain of Seapoint, Marie Wiseman who, on 95 points, had to withstand a blistering challenge from her counterpart at Loughrea, Patricia O'Hehir, who missed out by one point. Third was the Lady Honorary Secretary of Slieve Russell, Ann Harte.
Ashbourne's captain Paul Donnelly made it a double celebration when taking the Men's Honorary section with 94 points from the captain of Holywood, Derek Reade, captain of Westport, Willie Elliott, and the captain of Bantry Bay, Graham Kedie, taking the minor spots.
A steady three rounds by Mount Juliet's Sean O'Neill on 117 points saw him win the Secretary Managers section by eight points from Ashbourne's Ronan Smyth, the leader after the first round.
Back in third was Michael O'Sullivan (Gowran Park).
O'Neill (12) produced the goods on the final day with a magnificent 40 points . . . the best score of the week from all competitors . . . over Penina.
The final round at the course was the culmination of a great week's golf for the eight finalists and their club representatives. The four rounds played over four different courses (with three scores to count) of Pinta, Boavista, Morgado and Penina were played in brilliant sunshine. The week's golf was a fitting end to a competition started in July with over 90,000 golfers.
Golfsure's Simon P Russell, making the presentations at the Gala banquet in the Algarve, stated: "I am delighted the Beaumont Hospital Foundation will benefit from the competition" and he paid a special thanks to the Sunday Tribune for their support throughout the year.
Golfsure Personal, part of the AIG Group Inc, donated one euro from every premium during 2006 to the Beaumont Hospital Foundation for the purchase of the cancer treatment equipment . . . a move which closes on 100,000 for this most worthy of causes. Golfsure Personal is a part of the Golfsure product range and is a major sponsor of amateur golf in Ireland.
