METRO EIREANN, the multicultural newspaper founded six years ago by Chinedu Onyejelem and Abel Ugba, then both freelance journalists working at The Irish Times, last week launched a weekly format with a print run of 15,000. Helping launch the paper's new edition was Digicel chairman Denis O'Brien, author Roddy Doyle and Maeve Donovan of The Irish Times.
The newspaper received a strong endorsement from Jarlath Jennings of McConnells Advertising. "I think it's a strong product, " Jennings said, pointing to a non-native born population of some 400,000 in Ireland, up sharply in just a matter of months. "That speed of change is probably going to continue. Media opportunities aimed at those markets are more likely to be successful than unsuccessful."
Jennings said that the opportunity for Metro Eireann, as opposed to media outlets more narrowly focused on specific langugage groups or nationalities among the "New Irish", was to focus on the common experience of recent immigrants.
