Beauty set in stone as Cork's mills are converted to modern homes
Valerie Shanley

THE trend for restoring the dis-used mills of centuries ago as modern homes has brought new life to these lovely old buildings while also retaining their wonderful facades.

Palace Anne Mills, in Murragh, Co Cork, is now a residential development within a 17th-century stone mill overlooking Lake Mount to one side, and a wooded backdrop on the other. There are nine homes in total, one of which is The Warner Suite, now on the market through local agents Keane Mahony Smith.

This is a larger-than-average apartment . . . circa 135sq m (1,450sq ft) . . . which retains much of the character of its vintage. Located on the first floor, the original stone is exposed on external walls, while old timber support beams divide the space into different zones. One large room functions as living, dining room and kitchen, with the working kitchen tucked into one big corner. Shakerstyle contemporary units with polished granite surfaces go well next to the beams. Total accommodation also comprises the entrance lobby with cloakroom, hall, study and two bedrooms . . . both en-suite.

The mill is 40 minute's drive from Cork city and is near Enniskeane. Local towns are Bandon and Clonakilty.

Price: 495,000 Agent: Keane Mahony Smith, 021-427 0311
