Revise your nature studies in Old Schoolhouse
Valerie Shanley

SCORING high marks for geography and nature studies, the Old School House in Rathdangan, Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, is also an exercise in how a period building can be transformed to a modern home without losing character. This three-bed detached residence was, as the name suggests, originally the schoolhouse, but refurbished as a family home within an idyllic location. The original layout would have been one large classroom downstairs and a similar room above.

Now re-configured, the main room downstairs is a splitlevel, open-plan kitchen/dining/livingroom styled in a country decor. There is also a guest cloakroom at entrance level. Upstairs are three bedrooms, a small study and large bathroom with freestanding cast-iron bath.

Set on an acre of mature landscaped gardens, a unique feature is the flight of steps leading down to a walkway along the River Derreen . . . the bank of which belongs to the property. Eco-minded buyers will be interested to know the river has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) because of its freshwater pearl mussel.

The property is located 2km from Rathdangan within access to many amenities.
