I'M CONTINUALLY learning from my travels. These days I'm trying not to forget things like adaptors! I like to travel alone and I do that quite a lot . . . it means that I am more open to random things. One of my first holiday memories is of going to Stratford-on-Avon, Shakespeare territory, where my godmother lived. I was about nine and I went with my parents. We went to see The Merchant of Venice which was great.
Jamaica is a place that seduced me, for all the obvious reasons, but I also love Argentina . . . it's probably the most exciting country that I've ever visited. I spent a few weeks with the Welsh community in Patagonia, then saw the glaciers and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. I also had a great holiday in Taiwan several years ago. I love culture shock and certainly experienced it there.
When it comes to hotels though, the best one would have to be the Masseria Torre Coccaro in Puglia in Italy. It was so over the top. That's also where I've had my best meal abroad. We ate oysters with parmesan followed by pasta with octopus in its ink. I haven't ever had anything quite like it.
I definitely prefer arriving to the actual travelling . . . it's not exciting covering myself in nicotine patches and trying to sleep for 10 hours. Buenos Aires is my favourite city.
There seems to be more preservation of European culture there than anywhere else I have been outside Europe, yet without any of the divides that plague Europe.
My worst holiday was in Zagreb. I'd never go back because I had a terrible time there last Christmas. I went for a few days, largely because I had never been to Croatia, but it was terribly boring.
There are still great chunks of the world I have never visited, like Australia and New Zealand, that I'd love to go to, but so far haven't been able to get a visa because of my past.
Where am I off to next? Latin America again, around Christmas time.
