Chief suspect in attempted schoolgirl kidnappings known to the gardai
John Burke Crime Correspondent

GARDAI are investigating the attempted abduction of two young pupils from a top private all-girls school in Dublin. It is understood that the girls were considerably distressed by the incident, in which the man offered them toys to entice them to enter his car.

Following the incident, Loreto High School in Rathfarnham has sent a letter to all parents warning them that the man attempted to get the girls to go with him and that he is believed to be capable of striking again. The man, who is a married non-Irish national resident in the locality, also attempted to lure other young girls into his car.

Gardai have confirmed to the Sunday Tribune that the man's identity is known to them and that a full investigation into the reported incidents is underway.

The letter from Loreto High School, seen by the Tribune, states: "Two of our pupils were approached by the driver of a black Hyundai car, who tried to lure them in with toys. The girls were naturally very frightened. The matter was reported immediately to the gardai. It appears they have received other complaints regarding the person in question. Please warn your daughter to be especially careful when going home in the evening and never to take a lift with a stranger." The school's principal, Liz Cogan, told the Sunday Tribune that the incident was being treated seriously by the school but declined to comment further.

So far, there has been no reported incident in which a young girl has accompanied the man into his vehicle and it is understood that, to date, each of the children whom he approached had the foresight to contact their parents or guardians immediately following the incidents.
