A GALWAY entrepreneur has failed in his attempt to sell part of the Croke Park turf on the internet and ship it abroad. The Sunday Tribune has learned that an anonymous Loughrea man has been trying to sell "genuine grass and clay" from Croke Park on the online auction site eBay.
Using the eBay seller name Kenny4567, he has attempted to sell a piece of the hallowed GAA turf with a starting bid of StgĀ£0.01 and a further shipping cost of StgĀ£5.50.
In his description, Kenny4567, says:
"This is a genuine piece I got myself from Croke Park while on a private tour of the stadium. Not many of these pieces are available and here is your chance to get your hands on it. Enjoy bidding and may the best person win."
However, the opportunist seller appears to have had little luck in selling the grass and clay from the stadium, which will host over 82,500 fans for today's International Rules series game between Ireland and Australia.
After seeking bids on the tiny piece of Drumcondra turf for a number of days last week, no bids were placed in the novel online auction by the seller's deadline of just before midnight on Thursday night.
"I think that this is a scam as I don't know how this person would get soil or grass from Croke Park, " said Croke Park stadium director Peter McKenna. "The pitch is not removable. It is a Desso pitch so the grass is stitched and there is no clay under it as it is all sand."
McKenna added: "This sounds as if he has dug something out of his garden and tried to sell it on eBay. If anyone is really interested in getting a piece of Croke Park, the grass seed used on the pitch is sold in the Croke Park museum and a number of people buy it."
