Celtic extend lead with late fightback
Ronnie Esplin Celtic Park

SCOTTISH PREMIERLEAGUE CELTIC 2 HEARTS 1

CELTIC stretched their lead over Hearts at the top of the Bank of Scotland PremierLeague to 13 points after a dramatic 2-1 win in Glasgow.

In the 72nd minute Jambos striker Andrius Velicka skipped past Hoops defender Stephen McManus before driving past keeper Artur Boruc. However, in the 85th minute, the home side were back on level terms when substitute Jiri Jarosik, who had replaced Evander Sno, headed a Shunsuke Nakamura corner past Craig Gordon for a dramatic equaliser.

Then, deep into four minutes of added time, the home side took the lead with a scrappy goal by McManus, with the aid of Gordon who pushed the ball into his own net when it looked like he had possession of the Hoops' defender's shot.

Hearts' midfielder Paul Hartley sent a snapshot from 20 yards over the bar within a minute of the kick-off to signal the intent from the visitors. The home side, perhaps still smarting from their European defeat by Benfica in midweek, gingerly played their way into the match and it was clear that the long, searching ball to willing striker Kenny Miller was to be part of their gameplan.

In the 18th minute a 20yard drive from Hoops midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura breached the rearguard but was easily gathered by Craig Gordon.

In the 21st minute a low drive from Marek Zurawski was parried into the air by Gordon but the stretching Kenny Miller, following up, failed to get the rebound on target and Hartley nodded back to his keeper.

The Edinburgh men began to show a little more ambition but still the ball tended to drift towards Gordon's goal, Jose Goncalves' erratic defending in the Jambos' leftback area contributing to the situation. But the pattern of the match changed. On the half-hour mark the Hoops' defence were caught out by the pace of Jambos' wide man Saulius Mikoliunas who drew a good save from Artur Boruc with his right-footed drive from 12 yards.

But Hearts didn't make the most of their chances and were caught cold at the death.
