Dublin architects hailed for their opus
Valerie Shanley

ONCE a 15-metre wide garage space, now three award-winning family homes. Joint architects Cloonan O'Donnell and Carew Kelly Architects have just won an Opus Architecture and Construction award for Nos 5, 6 and 7 Church Lane, Rathmines, Dublin 6. The simplicity of the front elevation is deceptive for behind is well-planned living space for a young family, with playroom and kitchen adjacent, while at first floor level is an 'adult' room for relaxing and which opens to a walled terrace complete with outdoor fireplace.

For the judging panel, it was the site visit which really showed the ingenuity in not only the use of space, but how natural light was enhanced through what could have been a dark interior.

"We bought the site at the end of 2004, and the plan was for three three-storey homes with an emphasis on family living. It was quite a deep site, so we created several different levels . . . with all rooms leading off from a central staircase. One of the defining features is a very large roof light which streams natural light right down through the entire house, " explains architect Barry Kelly. The judges also commented on the quality of the workmanship, particularly in the brickwork, plaster and joinery.
