GRAFTON Street has never been this jammed before, but then, it has never been graced with the golden-girl presence of Paris Hilton before either, and Paris Hilton has some strut.
"You guys are hot, so thank you, " she tells the sweaty-faced crowd who have been waiting for hours and possibly years for this moment. "I feel so special and happy right now. I'm so excited to be in Ireland, you know, because I'm Irish."
Laughter erupts throughout the crowd and in BT2, where privileged fans and press are waiting to meet and greet the Hilton hotel heiress.
Paris Hilton couldn't be any less Irish. As she sashays up the aisle of the store to a blast of her own single 'Stars Are Blind', Hilton holds out her black and grey chiffon dress in one hand, rather as if she was at a ball, and regally waves with the other.
Having made her entrance, she is immediately ushered behind a screen for several minutes, where one can only guess what she's doing. When she re-emerges, it's phototime and the famous Hilton poses are put into live action.
This 25-year-old may have dropped out of High School, but as far as posing goes, she's an A student.
Little girls scream when they see her and others burst into tears with the sheer excitement of the moment.
Hilton greets them all languidly, but with a smile.
Press have been given precisely one minute to 'mingle' with Hilton, here to promote her new fragrance, appropriately titled 'Heiress.'
Mingling involves standing over the starlet, perched on a throne-like chair sipping cappuccino, and trying to get an insight into her life.
"I went to Lillie's's last night and some other place I can't remember the name of, " she drawls, carefully averting her face from the cameras to wipe her lips. "It was cool.
I'm really happy to be here."
Time up . . . so much for the deep and meaningful insight . . . but Paris's mom Kathy has more time to spare.
"Our philosophy is slow down and smell the roses, " she tells the press. Either that or smell Paris's new perfume, which BT2 staff are spraying everywhere.
Kathy Hilton has also launched a personal campaign to track down her old Irish nanny who minded her as a child. "Her name was Marie Clifford, although she may have married by now, " she said.
"I'd just love to meet her again."
Outside, the crowds show no sign of abating. "For God's sake, " says one man in disgust as he battles through the hordes. "It's only Paris Hilton."
