SPECULATION is mounting in Galway that Ollie and Joe Canning will not hurl for the county next year. The news, which follows the surprise suspensions imposed on Portumna arising out of last month's ill-tempered county final, will come as a serious blow to Ger Loughnane's plans for 2007.
Although neither brother has spoken publicly on the matter, the Tribune understands that both are outraged and baffled by the outcome of the county board GAC's investigation into the affair and are seriously considering withdrawing their services next year.
"Ollie and Joe realise that this would be a drastic step, but it's entirely the result of the attitude shown by the Galway county board and hurling board, " according to informed sources. "We were the victims in the county final, not the aggressors, yet it's us who have been punished for speaking out afterwards."
Another Canning brother, Davy, received a three-month ban following an incident in the county final while Portumna coach Sean Treacy and manager Jimmy Heverin were each hit with a twomonth suspension on foot of comments they made about the referee and the hurling board afterwards. The fact that action was taken against only one Loughrea player - Johnny Dooley, who was suspended for a month . . . has left Portumna fuming.
Treacy's suspension will have a direct effect, however limited, on Galway's preparations for the new season as the former All Star is a member of Loughnane's new management team.
An official statement is expected from the Portumna club early next week.
