Co Leitrim cottage: 250,000 A great escape to a Co Leitrim hideaway
Valerie Shanley

WITH its rural setting, lake views and a 100-year old history built into the traditionally thick cottage walls, this refurbished, three-bed property at Mooneenreave, Spencer Harbour, Drumkeeran, Co Leitrim, would make an ideal getaway for new owners seeking the quiet life. Or, indeed, an artist's studio, as the surrounding scenery could be a landscape painter's idyll. The local area is also well-known amongst lovers of traditional music.

Overlooking Lough Allen, and on a sheltered, circa one-acre site amidst rolling countryside, the property is within commuting distance of Carrick-on-Shannon and Sligo, 15 minutes' and 35 minutes' drive, respectively.

Before its restoration last summer, the property had been un-inhabited for some time but was in relatively good condition, although a bit on the small side. An extension was added on to the rear, to include a bedroom, shower room and small kitchen, bringing the floor space to circa 102sq m (1,100sq ft) . . . and all of which vastly improved the home comforts. Also included in the renovation was the installation of hardwood windows and doors, dual central heating and a new slated roof.

The main living/dining room has polished timber floors, an open fireplace and the attractive feature of French doors opening to the garden. There is also a fitted kitchen with tiling, shower room, two bedrooms to the front looking out to Lough Allen, and a third bedroom to the rear of the cottage.

There is an attic room with lake views.

The tranquil, secluded setting is part of the attraction with the property which has two entrances. A former overgrown lane from the bog, for bringing turf to the house, was cut back, and this forms the approach along with the main lane from the road. A number of mature trees provide shelter, including a majestic sycamore as old as the house itself.
