THEAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is this weekend examining whether a billboard advertisement for an upmarket Co Meath housing development has infringed the copyright of its 'Oscar' trademark.
Glenbrier Construction has used an Oscar-style image to promote its new Navan development, Academy Square. Billboards advertising the 30m development feature a statuette bearing a strong resemblance to the iconic Hollywood emblem, of which the Academy is notoriously protective.
The company insists that sufficient alterations have been made to avoid copyright problems. The Academy's assistant legal counsel Scott Miller this weekend said the academy would need time to "examine this matter further".
