Polygamist sect leader faces charges in two states

WHAT'S THE STORY?

The preliminary hearing of polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs (right) will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday.

Jeffs is accused of forcing teenage girls into polygamous marriages with older men, and faces the charge of being an accomplice to rape for his role in allegedly organising the marriages. He faces similar charges in Arizona.

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?

There was a dispute between Utah and Arizona over who would get to press charges against Jeffs "rst. He was arrested outside Las Vegas in August but there was a tug-of-war between the two states as to where he would appear in court "rst.

That argument was won by Utah, which will begin the case against the sect leader this week. He faces the possibility of "ve years in jail if convicted.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Jeffs faces the unusual possibility of being jailed in one state and having to appear for further charges in a separate state. Arizona has indicated that it intends on pressing similiar charges against Jeffs once his legal situation in Utah is resolved. He will be extradited as soon as his Utah trial ends.
