WHAT'S THE STORY?
Madonna (with daughter Lourdes, son Rocco, and Malawi child David, left) will find out tomorrow whether her planned adoption of the Malawi toddler is going to be delayed by human rights groups. Malawi's High Court will rule on whether a coalition of 67 child advocacy groups will help decide whether the 48-year-old pop singer and her British film-maker husband, Guy Ritchie, should be allowed adopt the one-year-old boy, named David Banda.
WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?
"The laws of Malawi are clear that if one wants to adopt a child, one has to stay with the child for at least 18 months for assessment, " said Justin Dzonzi, head of the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), which wants to get a stay on the temporary order granted to Madonna on 12 October, allowing her to take the baby. "We want to use the Madonna case to make sure that the rights of children in Malawi are effectively protected."
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
David Banda is already ensconced in Madonna and Ritchie's London home, but this could all change if Justice Andrew Nyirenda rules against them.
Admittedly, the HRCC has said it does not wish to block the adoption altogether, but it certainly wants to make sure that Madonna is a fit mother and that David Banda spends the next 18 months in his home country. The child's natural father certainly doesn't agree, having told human rights groups last week to "back off and leave my son alone."
