Something DCU has hosted this month is last Thursday's debate on International Rules. And despite the college's Dr Niall Moyna arguing that the series be retained, the punters voted 53-41 for Mickey Harte and Seamus McEnaney's argument that it be discontinued. Harte made a litany of points, like that the game does not feature the best Gaelic footballers (lest we forget, Dermot Earley played minutes at cornerforward while Stephen O'Neill was in the stands and Gooch and Michael Meehan were at home).
And as for the claim that there was nothing that went on in Croke Park that doesn't happen in Gaelic games every weekend, Harte made the point of proportionality. Two of the last three Rules games have been marred by violence; that's 66 percent of the sport's games. In football or hurling, you get . . . at most . . . five percent of games spoiled. In the last two internationals played in Croke Park, the Australians have gang-attacked Irish players before the ball was thrown in.
The DCU audience have it spot on. The series was worth resurrecting, but now, is no longer worth continuing.
