Keep digging whenever you get the chance, incorporating as much organic matter as you can into the soil, to open it up if it's heavy clay, or to add substance to a light sandy loam. If you don't get any further than breaking it up into big clods, that's alright because there's still plenty of time for any future frosts to break down the compacted clods into a "ne workable condition by spring.
