Donnybrook in Dalkey ATA surprise party at Dun Laoghaire's Pavilion theatre to celebrate his 80th birthday earlier this month, Hugh Leonard recalled a visit from Broderick Crawford to his Dalkey home. Crawford played the lead role in the 1949 film version of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer prize-winning novel All The King's Men "It was a Sunday afternoon, " Leonard said. "Donal McCann was there. I talked to Crawford about his mother, who was the actress Helen Broderick. She used to play hard-boiled funny parts in the 1930s. Then Broderick was trying to recall one of Donal's works for television, and I said The Pallisers. He said 'shut your goddamn mouth'. So I shut my goddamn mouth.
"The next thing, 20 minutes later, he said something and he asked me, 'do you agree'? I said, 'they're the truest words that ever came out of your goddamn mouth'. At this, to my horror, he stood up. He said 'do you wanna fight?' I said 'sure'. I could see he was drunk but even drunk he was a match for me sober. I thought, oh God, he's going to hit me. But he just stood there. Maybe he didn't fancy his chances, but he said, 'Aw, you said nice things about my maw'. And he sat down again. I thought, thank God for that."
