Even the Christmas tree is not immune to the style police. Hot off the catwalk in terms of decorating colours for 2006 is classy midnight blue. Marks & Spencer features this colour tree which takes on a cool, Nordic look when adorned with silver decorations and simple white fairy lights. Black may have been the new green in terms of last year's tree, but this time round, black is the new bauble colour instead, and Dunnes Stores has stylish designs in glass that won't date. For a really understated yet pretty look, stick to just one colour of bauble such as pearl white or silver and fill in gaps with red or deep pink bows of stiffened ribbon.
Crystal continues to enjoy a huge revival and the ultimate in tree decor is sparkling cut-glass droplets, snowflakes and mini chandeliers. Waterford Crystal is a happy hunting ground for heirloom tree decorations, plus tiny crystal hangers for suspending baubles. Still on a fashion note, the equivalent of the hey-look-at-me sequinned party dress is glittering sequinned baubles . . .break away from single colour and cover the tree in a myriad of amethyst, emerald and sapphire to catch everyone's attention. Tiny apartment? Suspend baubles from branches of twigs in tall vases, or hang at the window (in different lengths) with strands of narrow satin ribbon in olive green or deep pink (Hickey Fabrics).
