"It's certainly a very tempting season, no doubt about it. There are lots of tasty treats around and what I would try to do is stay clear of them and I make every effort not to buy chocolates, or have them or Christmas cake in the house. I'm not a pudding person; I don't have a Christmas pudding and personally, I won't be baking a cake. If I get treats I try to offload them on people because I'm a devil for eating them . . . I'd go searching in the cupboards in the evening.
Honestly, I will stay away from canapes at Christmas parties. It's one food that is usually loaded with calories, unless you go for the vegetable dips and the celery sticks, which are obviously going to be quite healthy. Sausage rolls are basically fat wrapped in a fat blanket. If you're going to a drinks party and you know that you're going to be starving and munch away at the canapes, I would advise people to go for something to eat before they get there . . . a salad, a bowl of soup, something warming to fill you up.
This Christmas we're invited to dinner and the last few years we've either visited friends or had people over so generally it's a traditional dinner.
But if I'm cooking, I am very, very cautious. Any recipes I follow, I reduce the fat content by half; I use half of the oil; I use stock cubes instead of oil . . . I get up to all kinds of tricks. Instead of frying onions for example, I saute them in a little bit of stock rather than olive oil, which you don't actually need to use. Having said that, it is one day of the year but you can totally indulge unnecessarily. You don't have to have everything cooked the 'fattest' way possible.
There are healthy ways of cooking Christmas dinner. Eat white turkey meat; stay away from the crispy skin . . . although I know it tastes delicious, and stay away from the bread sauce. You don't have to have three sauces on your turkey . . .you don't need to have cranberry, gravy and bread sauce."
Fiona's Tips
Think 'is it really worth it?' before eating it
Sneak in a bit more exercise
Walk to town to shop for pressies rather than bringing the car
Skip second helpings and listen to your body before and after you eat. Only eat when hungry and not for the sake of it
