POWER PLAY
The ESB agreed with the energy regulator to lower its market share in electrical power generation by 30%, shedding 1,300MW of existing capacity, by 2010. The Competition Authority, however, still wants ESB to be broken up. On Friday came news that the hikes in ESB and Bord Gais prices would be rolled back, but only slightly.
BATTLE FOR THE SKIES
Aer Lingus on Friday revealed details of a costcutting plan to employees, under renewed pressure from Ryanair, which earlier in the week pounced on a lowered Aer Lingus share price to raise its stake in the former state airline to around 26%.
MAKING THE GRADE
BBC Chairman Michael Grade stunned his colleagues by defecting to the Beeb's domestic terrestrial rival ITV to try and turn around its fading fortunes. Meanwhile ITV's onetime Irish colony, TV3, managed to retain rights to Coronation Street and other Granada programmes in a multi-year, multi-million euro deal.
BATTERSEA BONUS
The landmark London property of the Battersea Power Station was snatched by a Treasury Holdings-backed property consortium for 600m.
Former owner, Hong Kong businessman Victor Hwang, doubled his money in the deal.
