THERE are now more Porsche owners than ever in this country as the number of new models has jumped dramatically. There are about 700 on the road and another 35 enthusiasts have placed orders for delivery of a range of models for early next year. For them, prices are rarely an issue . . . the cheapest on sale here is priced at 72,850.
Interest in the brand is high right now as the 911 Targa has gone on sale . . . a showing in Cork drew in 100 people with 40 taking test drives.
The Porsche centre in Dublin is also organising test drives, where even larger numbers are expected.
The pricing for the new Targa starts at 154,808. It is entering the market with a choice of two 911 power units: the Targa 4 with a 3.6-litre engine or the 3.8-litre Targa 4S. The top speeds of these engines are 280km/h (174 mph) and 288 km/h (179 mph) and sprint times to 100km are just 5.3 seconds and 4.9 seconds.
The new Targa is based on the Carrera 4 with all-wheel-drive technology ensuring between five per cent and 40% of the engine's output goes to the front wheels to give good stability in all driving conditions.
The Targa is characterised by its large glass roof which is split into two segments, the sliding roof and the hinged rear window. The roof opening area is twice that of the Carrera Coupe.
