Con win a heartbreaker for UL Bohs
Thomond Park

CORK Constitution fought a gritty rearguard action in the second period before claiming a dramatic 11-8 win over UL Bohemian in their entertaining All-Ireland League tie on Thomond Park's back pitch yesterday.

It took an injury-time trysaving tackle on UL Bohs replacement Pierce Breen to secure the four precious League points for the Cork side. It was a heartbreaking defeat for UL Bohs' who harboured ambitions of returning to the top of the table before kick-off. The home side will feel that they deserved to take more than just a mere bonus point from the game.

Con's 8-0 half-time advantage seemed hardly sufficient given the strength of the breeze.

The visitors, who have an excellent record against UL Bohs in the league, got off to a perfect start when scrumhalf Peter McKee got in for a try in the sixth minute following a powerful maul by the Con pack.

A Richie Lane penalty in the 28th minute saw Con stretch their advantage to eight points. UL Bohs' cause was not helped in the opening period by a creaking line-out.

The Limerick side did exert plenty of pressure on their opponents, but they were unable to translate it into scores.

What transpired to be the crucial score of the second half arrived seven minutes after the restart when Lane converted a second penalty goal. To their credit, UL/Bohemian recovered from the setback to play their best rugby of the game in the closing half an hour.

Their Aussie-born out-half Ben Martin kicked a superb penalty from inside his own half. In the 56th minute, the prolific number 10 made a terrific inside break which released winger Ian Hanley to score a wonderful try in the left corner. Although the conversion was missed, UL/Bohs' still had plenty of time to win the game.

Their best chance arrived a minute into injury time, but replacement Pierce Breen was denied a match-winning try by that last-gasp tackle.
