During the week, the commander of Fiji's military forces, Frank Bainimarama, told the country's president that he would initiate a coup unless the government agreed to a number of key demands by Monday. But why Monday? "I maintain my demands and the deadline still stands and I will make a commitment to my stand after the rugby match, " Bainimarama told the Fijian press on Friday.
The match the commander was referring to is the annual clash between the army and the police, a game that attracts huge crowds in the Fijian capital Suva. At least some things won't change if Bainimarama takes control.
