THE LAW LIBRARY
Compiled by Ciaran Cronin

A few weeks back, during the first test between France and New Zealand, the All Blacks' Sitiveni Sivivatu called for, and was awarded, a mark inside his own 22. The winger then dropped the ball onto his right knee before passing to Leon McDonald. The whole action looked a bit odd on screen and a quick consultation of the law book revealed that Sivivatu's action was actually illegal. Law 21.3 (b) states that:
"Bouncing the ball on the knee is not taking a kick" and anybody who's feeling clever and wants to kick with their heel had also better watch out.

The laws of the game state that "a kick is made by hitting the ball with any part of the leg or foot, except the heel, from the toe to the knee but not including the knee." Spoil sports.
