THE Co Monaghan-trained Sophist sprang a 5/1 surprise in the Grade 3 Tote Winners Circle Competition Juvenile Hurdle at Fairyhouse yesterday when taking the spoils by two and a half lengths in the hands of Philip Enright, with market leader Celtic Warrior fading into fourth.
The Montjeu colt is trained by John McConnell, who said: "This horse will have a break now. He'll come back in February, and his long-term target is the Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham."
Trainer Mouse Morris was busy with his two runners at Sandown, but collected in his absence through 8/1 chance Johnnie Dillinger, the mount of Conor O'Dwyer, in the Kildownet Group Maiden Hurdle. Owned by Sue Magnier, the six-year-old out-pointed 5/2 favourite Corrigeenroe by three lengths.
Bullhill Flyer has been a good servant to his rookie trainer Sabrina Harty and has been responsible for all three winners of her career to date, the most recent being his 33/1 win under 7lb claimer Shane Hassett in the Bee Bee Developments Hurdle.
The Liam Burke-trained Sir Frederick, with Davy Russell in the saddle, put his chasing experience to good use in the Brian King Engineering Beginners Chase, and was rewarded with a five and a half length victory over the 15/8 favourite Merdeka.
