TRANSPORT minister Martin Cullen has 'blood on his hands' after the death of a cyclist in Dublin, Green TD Ciaran Cuffe has said.
Cuffe levelled the accusation in a letter to yesterday's Irish Times, criticising Cullen for failing to ensure that all trucks, and not just new trucks, are fitted, from January, with 'cyclops' mirrors, which make cyclists more visible from large vehicles. He also slammed guidelines issued by Cullen which prevent local authorities from lowering speed limits on city streets, such as Dublin's O'Connell Street and the quays, which are also national roads.
Cuffe yesterday told the Sunday Tribune that he stood over his use of the words "blood on the hands", which he said were prompted by the death of another cyclist. He claimed the minister could do much to improve the lot of cyclists and public transport users.
He has also asked gardai to "dedicate more resources" to ensuring that vehicles, including garda cars, do not park on bicycle lanes.
Cullen could not be contacted for comment.
