THE Police Service of Northern Ireland is to investigate a website that claims it is an official police point of information. A webpage set up on the social networking site MySpace (www. myspace. com /psni) claims to be the PSNI's official presence on MySpace, but the PSNI itself confesses to knowing nothing about it.
After the Sunday Tribune explained to bemused press officers what MySpace was, police officials set about determining the source of the website. "This isn't an official police website, " a PSNI spokeswoman said. "It has nothing to do with us. It will probably be investigated."
The existence of the account was discovered by the Irish blogging community who posted the link on various weblogs.
The tagline on the webpage reads 'Making Northern Ireland Safer For Everyone'.
Next to it is the PSNI badge logo. Under the 'details' section, the PSNI divulges that its status is 'single' and that it is an Aries. Amongst the MySpace PSNI's contacts or 'friends' (which at the time of writing stood at 54) are the Red campaign (spearheaded by Bono), the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the pop-rock band Ash and Alternative Ulster magazine.
The 'PSNI' even responded to comments left by contacts on its page, posting on one MySpace member's page "'out of sight, out of mind', if we keep in sight. . . we keep in mind." A comment left by 'PSNI' on another member's page read, "We know we can't make things safe whilst sitting at a computer. It's simply to let people know we are here and easy to get in contact with."
The Sunday Tribune contacted the creator of the PSNI page, but received no response.
