THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION has agreed to double the amount of state aid that its member governments can give to small companies.
Governments will now be able to give direct grants of 200,000 over three years. The Commission said that it wants to boost economic growth and is hoping the grants will primarily be used in aiding start-up companies and firms engaged in research. From 1 January, governments will also be able to give loan guarantees of up to 1.5m over three years to small companies.
