TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern is to be asked to approve the axing of at least three Fianna Fail general election candidates, including his close confidant Cyprian Brady.
The controversial removal of Brady in Dublin Central, Mattie McGrath in Tipperary South and Norma Foley in Kerry North has been discussed by FF's powerful constituencies committee, headed by deputy leader Brian Cowen.
The committee is examining confidential opinion poll findings as it makes final decisions on candidates to contest the general election.
Reliable sources have confirmed that the committee will make its recommendations to Ahern next month.
Cowen's committee favours Brady's removal to maximise the chance of retaining two seats in Dublin Central. Brady supporters argue, however, that as he is slightly ahead of the other FF candidate, Mary Fitzpatrick, in opinion polls, he deserves to stay on the ticket.
But with Sinn Fein's Mary Lou McDonald polling well, Fitzpatrick, with a base in the Sinn Fein Cabra stronghold, is seen to have an edge.
A decision to drop Brady will test Ahern, given their close relationship. The removal of McGrath is more straightforward, but dropping Foley, a daughter of former TD Denis Foley, could cause a split in Kerry North.
New party rules introduced since 2002 mean that no Fianna Fail candidates have yet been formally ratified. This has allowed party headquarters to monitor closely the extensive polling of marginal constituencies and those with new candidates.
Having taken the final decision, Fianna Fail's election preparedness will move up a gear with the expected confirmation that PJ Mara, already an influential member of the Cowen committee, will return as director of elections.
FF and PD advisors are also currently putting the finishing touches to a progress review of their programme for government. The review will be published next month along with the new National Development Plan. The government parties hope these documents will set the agenda as they seek a third term in power.
