Four killed in Paris crash and dense fog causes pile-ups

FOUR young people were killed in Paris and another five were injured in a car crash early yesterday. A Mercedes driven at high speed collided with a Polo at a red light on the Avenue d'Italie at 4.30am. All four victims were between 17 and 24 years old. Two others in the Polo were seriously injured.

The 33-year-old driver of the Mercedes was said to have been under the influence of alcohol. He has been arrested. Two passengers in the Mercedes were also injured.

Also yesterday morning, dense fog in the southwest of France has contributed to a major pileup, involving between 200 and 300 cars, on the Bordeaux-Bayonne motorway.

Rescue services had difficulty reaching the site due to heavy holiday traffic. A first pileup was followed by a another on the opposite lane. The motorway has been closed.
