The weather makes it a day for Slippers
Claire Barry

RACING at Navan yesterday was hit by the weather, when the two chases on the card were abandoned because the chase track was deemed unraceable due to frost. However, the remaining five races survived and the meeting got underway at 1.15pm.

Niall 'Slippers' Madden has five rides at Kempton on St Stephen's Day, including the mount on the David Pipetrained Puntal in the Stan James King George VI Chase, and he warmed up by taking the Roast Turkey Maiden Hurdle by 10 lengths on JP McManus's Wins Now.

The 6/1 chance is trained by his father 'Boots' Madden, who said of Wins Now, "He likes this ground and will probably go for a 'winner's' race early in the new year.

He'll make a lovely chaser and has more respect for fences than for hurdles."

The Christmas Cracker Handicap Hurdle was the most valuable on this truncated card, and it was won by the Dessie Hughes-trained Dosco, who justified favouritism by the margin of 12 lengths in the hands of Roger Loughran.

Heron's Flight was sent off favourite for the Santa Claus Maiden Hurdle but finished a disappointing fifth behind Marikhar, a 12/1 chance from the Seamus Fahey stable.

Alan Donoghue's mount took command at the penultimate flight and won by a length from Slash And Burn.

Garvan Donnelly, a former assistant to Arthur Moore, saddled his first winner of the season courtesy of Astalanda, who ran out the 11length winner of the Christmas Greetings Handicap Hurdle under 20-yearold Sonny Carey, whose sister Rose owns the 12/1 shot.

Racing concluded with an all-the-way success for the Francis Flood-trained Bronx Girl in the bumper. Partnered by Robbie McNamara, she followed up her Punchestown victory by two lengths from Sheriussa.
