Robin Williamson The Iron Stone ECM (64m 23s) . . .
Scotsman Robin Williamson, founder of the influential '60s unit the Incredible String Band, is a folk singer, a reciter, a melismatist, a harpist and a storyteller. It's a surprise then to find him on a prestigious contemporary jazz label. But this is his third album for ECM, and on it he matches his harp and voice with musicians from the free end of the jazz spectrum, including viola player Mat Maneri and the legendary bassist Barre Phillips. The results, which blur the lines between poetry and experimental jazz, will not be for everyone, but many will be charmed.
