NORTHERN LIGHT THE average weight gain after the holidays is 5lb, which goes on quicker than you can say "selection box". Alas, it can take quite some time to get back to your pre-Christmas fighting weight, which is why a stint at the Body Soul Experience at Harvey's Point Country Hotel in Donegal sounds so appealing.
The founder of the programme is Aidan Boyle, who has worked with the likes of Davina McCall, Laura Linney and Mariella Frostrup in the past. This year sees the launch of its first RenewU weekend, which is three days of four-hour hikes, two daily yoga sessions, bike rides, massages and a low-cal but delicious menu. Fabulous scenery, luxurious accommodation and the restorative effects of fresh Donegal air and all that exercise should restore your equilibrium once again . . . and don't worry, you won't be either weighed or measured. Available from 1 February, prices start from 890.

COS YOU'RE WORTH IT THE combination of beauty treatments and Fran Cosgrave, all under the one roof, sounds like the most riotous of evening entertainment.
Fran will be there in attendance at the Sanas Health and Beauty Salon (which is owned by his mum, Betty), Churchtown, Dublin, alongside lots of other beautiful people on 10 January, at 6pm.
Therapists will be available to do free Elemis mini-facials, Dermalogica face mapping and OPI manicures and pedicures on the evening, but places are limited, so you must book in advance. Guests will also enjoy refreshments, a goodie bag, 10% off future treatments booked on the night and, of course, glimpses of Fran. Call Sanas on 01-2960368 and visit www. sanas. ie.
WATERLOO SUNRISE THE general consensus is that this month there's not a whole lot else to do except self-improve. But instead of taking the self-punishing route (ie, I'm never eating/drinking/spending money ever again) do something positive instead. Taking a course will rouse you from your lethargic post-Christmas slump, and cooking is certainly one of those life skills that you'll never regret acquiring. Alix Gardner . . . who has cooked for everybody from Ralph Lauren to Hollywood celebrities who are just too famous to mention . . . is offering 10-week courses, which start at the end of January. They run for one night a week at 71 Waterloo Road in Dublin 4, with lots of personal supervision, and you get to take home your meal and enjoy it later. Options include 'Around the World', which takes a look at modern trends and exotic ingredients and 'Healthy Eating', which emphasises natural, wholesome ingredients.
There are still some places left for the January courses which cost 700, including cost of ingredients. Visit www. dublincookery. com and call 01 6681553 for more details.
HORSE LIPS IFyou haven't picked up your 2007 calendar yet, you must get your hands on the ISPCC's Tache for Cash offering. You may recognise some of these lovely lads (Eoin Whelehan from Delicious 9 and Goodtime John) posing in all of their charity shop chic finery, in locales around Dublin. The guys came up with the concept, started growing their taches in early November, set about finding the money they needed to finance it and took the pictures themselves. The results will make you both laugh and cry and all the proceeds go to the ISPCC.
Calendars are on sale in Dublin's Tower Records, Road Records, and City Discs, and in the ISPCC's offices at 20 Molesworth Street, Dublin. Call 01 6794944 for more information.
