Oche legend Bobby George believes talk of 17-yearold Michael van Gerwen winning the Lakeside World Championship should wait until after the youngster's opening match today.
The Dutch wonderkid has been installed as hot favourite for the title after his sensational breakthrough on the BDO circuit this year, having risen to number three in the rankings at such a tender age. But 61-year-old George, runner-up in 1980 and 1994, would prefer to see how the teenager adapts to the unique Frimley Green atmosphere before agreeing with those that think he can become the youngest ever world champion.
"Michael has a gift for playing darts - he must have to play as well as he does, " said George. "He is playing the best darts and also has a good temperament. But he is expected to win the title and the pressure might be too much for him. He can do it but I won't say he will.
"He has a dangerous first-round opponent in Gary Robson, who won the Bavaria World Darts trophy in 2005. Gary has said he will beat him, so there'll be no time for Michael to settle down. But if Michael gets past the first round he could do well."
