AIB LEAGUE DIVISION ONE TERENURE COLLEGE 18 BUCCANEERS 8 Lakelands
BUCCANEERS' winning sequence was well and truly ended by a resurgent Terenure side who came out clear winners at Lakelands Park yesterday.
A masterful breakaway try by outhalf Shane Cullen after 32 minutes ended the midlanders' hopes, though they did manage a consolation try in the last minute when fullback Tom Cregan touched down after a fine break by right winger Ted Robinson.
Forwards and backs on both sides played enterprising rugby in the first half and entertained the sparse crowd, despite the 3-3 half time scoreline. Buccaneers seemed to have the edge, but too many dropped final passes cost them dearly. The second half started brightly but deteriorated somewhat and was marred throughout by petty penalty giveaways, but gradually the Terenure pack began to dominate.
They gained the advantage after 52 minutes with a pushover try by Darragh O'Doherty and from there on they more or less camped in foreign territory. Rob McCarthy failed to convert the pushover try but overall, he contributed some massive runs plus two penalties and a conversion. Buccaneers really lost their way in the final stages and only Robinson's determined run redeemed matters when Cregan got the consolation try.
