Charlton see Wembley road cut short at Forest
Mark Staniforth City Ground

FA CUP THIRD ROUND NOTTINGHAM FOREST 2 CHARLTON 0

NATHAN TYSON inspired Nottingham Forest to a magnificent FA Cup third-round victory over Premiership strugglers Charlton at the City Ground. Tyson's surging performance down the left caused chaos in the visitors' back line, with Junior Agogo and Grant Holt grabbing the goals in a fourminute spell near the end of the first half. The shellshocked visitors barely managed to summon a response as Forest sat on their lead in the second half.

Right from the start, the League One side displayed the intent they would show throughout, with both Agogo and Holt trying early runs at a nervy-looking visiting defence. Forest immediately fashioned a chance with Tyson breaking into the left side of the box and hitting a low cross which clattered Jonathan Fortune and rebounded to safety.

Darren Ambrose also got in a timely block in the 13th minute to prevent Holt's ball through the middle reaching Tyson, who had raced through the visitors' defence.

Tyson again showed his threat in the 17th minute by blazing half the length of the field and steamrollering Kishishev before finally being stopped in the box by Talal El Karkouri.

And Forest spurned the best chance of the game in the 21st minute when Tyson again crossed from the left and James Perch connected to flash a header across the face of goal from point-blank range.

Marcus Bent almost made Forest pay at the other end with a 20-yard snap-shot which Smith had to parry up over his bar for the first corner of the game.

Pardew made what appeared to be a tactical change in a bid to cope with Tyson's significant threat as he withdrew Amady Faye and slotted Souleymane Diawara in at centre-back.

But almost immediately Perch crossed from deep on the right and Agogo got in behind Diawara to sweep the ball under Thomas Myhre and into the net to give Forest a 28th-minute lead.

Two minutes later Tyson fired in a cross from the opposite flank which clattered against defender Fortune and screwed up to hit his own bar before squirting to safety.

But rampant Forest extended their lead in the 32nd minute when Nicky Southall whipped in a curling free-kick from the right and Holt rose to head home.

The shell-shocked visitors were suddenly embroiled in a damage limitation exercise but despite a period of possession they mustered no new chances to get back into the match.

Charlton needed a good start to the second half and they almost got it when Bent connected with Dennis Rommedahl's left-wing cross but saw his powerful drive blocked by Ian Breckin. And with the home defence holding firm Ambrose was forced to resort to a long-range effort which flashed wide of Smith's left-hand post.

Diawara had to resort to illegal means to stop another Tyson surge down the left in the 55th minute, incurring the wrath of the home fans as well as a booking from referee Chris Foy.

Charlton were pushing forward to little effect, with Jimmy Flloyd Hasselbaink superbly shackled by Morgan who nipped a 65thminute Matt Holland cross off the striker's head.

Both sides made changes in the 66th minute, with Jerome Thomas replacing Rommedahl for the visitors and goalscorer Agogo coming off for fellow striker Scott Dobie.

With time running out for the visitors, they began resorting to increasingly speculative measures and El Karkouri fired well wide from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute.

Charlton had their best chance in the 78th minute when Gary Holt almost deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper in a crowded box only for Smith to get down well to save.

The home side might have made it three with 10 minutes to go when Perch crossed towards Dobie but the ball was well cleared by Fortune in front of goal.

Regardless, there will be no return to the cup final this year for Pardew.
