A CITY councillor who resigned the Fianna Fáil whip during a drugs controversy is still making much of his party connections in his election literature.
Councillor Liam Kelly resigned from the party's group on Dublin City Council in early September after he was photographed allegedly snorting cocaine.
In recent days, however, he has been distributing literature in his constituency on which the party logo is prominent, wishing his constituents a happy new year.
The calendar also includes his phone number and that of the two sitting Fianna Fáil TDs in the constituency, including minister of state, with responsibility for drugs, Noel Ahern.
A spokeswoman for the party expressed "surprise" that Kelly was distributing literature inferring he was still a Fianna Fáil councillor.
"We were not aware of those calendars and the party is surprised that he did it as he has resigned the party whip."
At the time of his resignation, Fianna Fáil had launched an investigation into the allegations in order to consider whether Kelly had any future as a party member.
According to the spokeswoman, the investigation was "parked" some time ago to allow for medical help to be administered to Kelly.
"We are now waiting to hear back from his solicitors, " the spokeswoman said.
The controversy broke last August when a newspaper published the photograph of Kelly holding a rolled-up piece of paper and hunched over what appeared to be white powder. At the time, the Glasnevin-based councillor made a complaint to the gardaí that he had been the subject of a blackmail attempt. No charges have been brought in relation to that complaint.
Kelly had claimed that the photograph was "staged" and that he had been rolling a cigarette. Prior to resigning the party whip, there had been mounting frustration within the party at the councillor's failure to properly address the whole issue.
