THE CRYSTAL BALL PREVIEW OF 2007 - PT 2 Having previewed the opening six months of 2007 last week, Sideline Cuts admits that the crystal ball we were using to pre-empt upcoming events got just a little hazy these past few days (Tribune budget cuts forced us to buy it in Lidl). But for the sake of professionalism, we still looked into the cloudy sphere and tried to work out just what is going to happen in the latter half of the year.
July Having seen off both Meath and Kildare, Dublin look for their third Leinster football title in a row.
Against Laois, having struggled for long periods, they trail by two points going into the closing minutes.
Former Irish rugby international Eric Miller enters, picks the ball up just outside the 22, breaks three tackles and barges Fergal Byron over the line. The goal stands because Dublin needs an All Ireland, not a round of qualifiers.
August Waterford beat Cork in the All Ireland hurling quarter-final. (Note to editor, that one might be a little bit too farfetched. ) September After a year fraught with controversy, Nicky Brennan resigns as GAA president. The straw that broke the Kilkenny man's back was yet another suspension row as Henry Sheffiin and Cha Fitzpatrick suspiciously had bans overturned. Michael Greenan walks into the job before the All Ireland finals, refuses the Artane Boys Band entry to Croke Park and instead has a musical group from the Enniskillen Orange Lodge entertain the crowd.
October Greenan and AFL chairman Andrew Demetriou bring back the International Rules Series. Sean Boylan brings a team composed of the Dunshauglin Junior 'C' footballers and Mick Lyons. After six consecutive nights on the beer, the Irish take to the MCG "eld and, in a display of brutality not seen since Ming the Merciless, ease their way to victory.
November The International Rules Series is again cancelled. Sean Boylan reacts angrily to claims by Australian coach Kevin Sheedy, describing the Australians as "the greatest bunch of con men I've ever seen".
December A new wave of kindness sweeps the association. Charity games are held between St Patrick's and Glenealy and Camross and Castletown while Ger Loughnane and Fr Harry Bohan duet John Lennon's 'Imagine' at a karaoke night in Feakle in aid of the Cork hurlers.
