Chelsea still in the hunt
Adrian Curtis Stamford Bridge

FA PREMIERSHIP CHELSEA 4 WIGAN 0

DUTCH winger Arjen Robben was inspirational as Chelsea destroyed Wigan to keep the pressure on leaders Manchester United at the top of the Premiership.

A first-half goal from Frank Lampard - his 13th of the season - had put the champions in control and Robben added a second thanks to a defensive howler from Kristofer Haestad in the 63rd minute.

Six minutes later, Robben's cross was turned into his own net by Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and Didier Drogba completed the scoring with a fourth in the 90th minute.

After a week of speculation over the future of Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho, the home fans responded by singing his name continuously in the opening five minutes and standing up for 'the special one'. The Portuguese coach is rumoured to be leaving the club in the summer but, in his pre-match programme notes, he asked the fans to rise to the challenge of helping them to overcome their indifferent period on the pitch.

They certainly heeded his request with a rousing welcome for the man who has led them to successive titles but his side were not as quick to respond. It took them 11 minutes to deliver their first shot at the Wigan goal. Arjen Robben and Wayne Bridge shared passes on the left flank and when Bridge sent his low cross into the penalty area, Didier Drogba let fly with a drive which soared a yard over the crossbar.

But two minutes later Chelsea were in front thanks to stand-in captain Lampard.

Robben was fouled on the left flank and the England midfielder's free-kick curled its way into the area before bouncing into the net with Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and defender Fitz Hall flatfooted.

Wigan had been disappointing in attack with Emile Heskey often muscled out of the action by the commanding frame of Michael Essien.

The Ghana international, playing alongside Ricardo Carvalho at the centre of defence, kept the former England international in check with ease.

Chelsea fans once again gave Mourinho a chorus of `stand up for the special one' and chanted his name in a clear show of support for the Portuguese coach. They had more to cheer when Chelsea were gifted a second goal in the 62nd minute.

Haestad's attempted backpass fell straight at the feet of Robben and the Dutchman, inspirational all afternoon, ran on, rounded the onrushing Kirkland and slipped the ball into an empty net.It got even worse for the Wigan keeper when he scored an own goal in the 69th minute.

Robben's run down the leftflank ended when he crossed the ball low into the penalty area and it was turned into his own net by Kirkland.

Chelsea made a double substitution in the 81st minute and when Robben was replaced by youngster Ben Sahar, he was given a standing ovation by the fans. Mikel Jon Obi replaced Kalou at the same time and moments later Geremi was introduced to the action in place of Paulo Ferreira. Drogba completed the scoring in the 90th minute when he headed home a cross from Geremi.
