VODAFONE'S 3G broadband modem takes square aim at Irish Broadband's Go! data card (a previous Must Have). It's a very even fight. Both are ridiculously easy to install. In purely superficial terms the Vodafone modem is a slightly more stylish unit, little bigger than a mouse, and less obtrusive than its rival. Then again, it is Euro30 more expensive.
Vodafone promises up to 1.4 megabits per second versus Irish Broadband's 500 kilobits. In practice, however, we found the top speed elusive on the Vodafone product and both devices delivered very similar performance. Go! is so far limited to the greater Dublin area, although it will be available in Galway , Cork and Limerick by the end of March. Outside the capital the 3G broadband modem scores points over its rival. Vodafone has 70% population coverage and includes a map on its website where prospective customers can check availability in their areas. Overall a solid mobile internet offering.
DAMAGE: Euro129 from Vodafone stores and other agents or online at www. vodafone. ie. Subscription is Euro39.99 per month with a 12-month minimum contract.
