Andy Grove wasn't your average tech chief exec. Born Jewish in Hungary in 1936, Andras Istvan Grof survived Nazi occupation only to be faced with Soviet invasion at the age of 20. He fled to the US, where he wound up in Silicon Valley to become Intel's employee number three. A gripping biographical account of one of the most influential tech executives ever, this also offers some insights into the Andy Grove way of managing, which was hardly bloodless. He fostered a strong corporate culture at Intel, one that was ruthless in stressing performance and smarts over loyalty. And he saw off challenges from lower-cost Japanese manufacturers when he took over as CEO in 1987 while growing the company from $4bn to $176bn in revenues and increasing market cap 4,500%.
There are timely lessons in competing with China, Korea and India. Essential reading.
