FRIENDS FOR LIFE EOGHAN SCOTT & DANNY O'REILLY

COUSINS Eoghan Scott and Danny O'Reilly are two singer-songwriters from Dublin.

Eoghan (26) grew up with his younger sister Aoife, and studied Performing Arts at the Rock School in Ballyfermot. A full-time musician and music producer, Eoghan recently released his acclaimed debut EP, South Circular Stories, and plays bass in his mother Frances Black's band. He is currently in studio recording material for his debut album, and has been going out with his girlfriend Emma for the past six years.

Danny (22) has an older brother Conor and younger sister Róisín, and is in the final year of a Commerce degree in UCD, after which he plans to pursue music full-time.

Danny played football with the Dublin Minors Under-18s and Under 21s, and is lead singer with his popular band, The Coronas. He co-wrote two tracks on his mother Mary Black's last album, and was her support act on her 2005 American tour.

The Coronas have just released their debut single, Decision Time, and they will be playing Crawdaddy on 15 February.

Eoghan on Danny Danny is four years younger than me, so I hung out more with his brother Conor when we were kids, because there's less than a year between us. My family lived next door to Granny's, so when Conor and Danny were visiting her, they'd usually call into us, and we'd hang out. Danny was Granny's little angel.

When I was about 15, Conor, Danny and I had weekly guitar lessons together from Mary's guitar player, Bill Shanley, which was brilliant. Conor and I had already had some previous lessons, and I remember poor Danny being really frustrated, because we were more advanced than he was, and his hands were too small for some of the finger-picking.

I think I'm closer to Danny now than I ever was, as the age difference doesn't matter any more. He's a great laugh on a night out, and is mad for the craic. The music is a huge bond between us, because we both take it very seriously and it's really important to us. We're quite different in what we do musically, but the link of songwriting and performing is always there. I remember our families being down in Kerry one year when I was about 16, all having the craic, and even though I'd never written a song in my life, I got it into my head that I wanted to write a song with Danny and send it to Ronan Keating, as he was really huge at the time - I thought we'd make millions! It was really cheesy, and I used to sing the verse and Danny would sing the chorus, because it was really high and his voice hadn't broken yet.

I used to have a bit of a hang-up about saying that I was part of the Black family when I was younger, and I know Danny felt the same. For me, it was only because I was worried about what other people would think about me talking about my mam, in case they thought I was using her to get somewhere. I don't have a problem with people knowing now though, and I'm really proud of my mam and my auntie, and have such respect for them that they can still make it in such a tough business after all these years.

Danny is really calm and laid-back, and nothing fazes him. He's a really chilled-out character and lovely to be around. He's an amazingly gifted songwriter, and can write melodies that are unbelievably catchy. I think I could learn loads from him in terms of song-writing. I've done support for The Coronas a fair bit, which is great, as I find his band's gigs always put me in a good mood. You can really feel the buzz between them on stage, and the respect.

Danny on Eoghan Eoghan used to hang around with my brother Conor when we were kids, and they played football together. I was younger, so they didn't want me to play with them, and gave me the job of being the grassman. I had to go around making sure the grass was at the right level for them, and I was delighted with myself because I had an important job.

I remember being about 10 years old and watching Eoghan and Conor playing in their very first band. They were only about 14, and I was blown away by them - I thought they were amazing. They really inspired me to want to do something in music myself.

We grew up in a very well-known musical family, but neither of us likes to make a big deal of it, and what we do is miles apart in terms of genres. My music is indie-rock and Eoghan's is more folk-rock, so it's very different to what my mam and Frances do, although of course, we're very proud of them both. Our families are very close, and we all went on an Irish music cruise in the Caribbean a couple of years ago, and Eoghan and I shared a cabin. We found it really easy to talk to each other about what was going on in our lives.

It's great to have someone close like Eoghan to talk to outside of my band, because he gives great advice and we bounce ideas off each other. My songwriting is more poppy and commercial, whereas I think Eoghan's is more original and unique. He writes amazing songs with great imagery in them, and they inspire me to strive to try and write something deeper.

I sang backing vocals on one of his new recordings and it really blew me away - I thought it was one of the best songs he's done. I really value his opinion highly, and would be more nervous showing a new song of ours to Eoghan than anyone else.

I think Eoghan's great - he's really easy to get along with and is a very kind person. There's nothing false about him, and he always tells you the truth. We've done some gigs together, and I think that has made us even closer. We played Oxegen together last summer, and had a brilliant weekend hanging out afterwards, even apart from the gigs, which went really well. I think even though we're doing different things musically, there will always be a connection between us, and we'll definitely do things with one another musically in the future.
