LAOIS ADVANCE IN WALSH CUP THANKS TO LATE BROPHY POINT

A late point from half-forward John Brophy helped Laois advance to the Walsh Cup semi-final following a slender 1-17 to 1-16 win over Dublin at Rathdowney yesterday.

Dublin were ahead by a point at the interval but relied heavily on frees from David Curtin to keep them in the game. The teams were level on nine occasions during the contest, including three minutes from the end when a late goal from Keith Dunne for Dublin meant that extra time looked a distinct possibility.

But Brophy's 68th-minute point ensured the hosts prevailed at the finish by the minimum.
