Ger Loughnane captured his first bit of silverware for Galway as they won the Connacht Hurling League title at Dangan yesterday. Portumna's Leo Smith fired home both of Galway's goals as Matt Murphy's students were put to the sword on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-11.
Colin Ryan gave NUIG real hope with a goal after 16 minutes but Galway responded immediately with Smith pouncing to finish from close range and they led by eight points at the break.
NUIG needed a good start to the second-half but they were rocked inside three minutes when Smith drilled home his second goal to open up an 11-point lead which NUIG were unable to rein in.
