Keane hits heights
Mike McGrath White Hart Lane

FA CUP FOURTH ROUND TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3 SOUTHEND UNITED 1

AARON LENNON dazzled on the flanks at White Hart Lane as Tottenham reached the fifth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Southend.

Robbie Keane had scored the opener before Lennon set up Jermaine Jenas for the second. Freddy Eastwood's penalty dragged the Championship's bottom-placed club back into the tie but Lennon then created a goal for Mido to score.

Early on Mido almost sent Keane through but goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan rushed out to claim the ball.

The Egypt striker then headed over from a Jenas freekick after Young-Pyo Lee was fouled by Jamal CampbellRyce on the left flank in the seventh minute. Mido was in the thick of the action, dancing around Adam Barrett before threading a ball through for Paul Stalteri, but the danger was cleared. Jenas was the next to go on a mazy run but Steven Hammell was back just in time.

Spurs, however, were ahead in the 12th minute through Keane. Didier Zokora carried the ball from defence to attack over 40 yards before finding Keane on the edge of the area, whose shot took a wicked deflection off Hammell before wrongfooting Flahavan. Gower had a great chance to level soon afterwards but could not get power on his volley at the far post.

Keane then screwed a shot wide after Hossam Ghaly got behind the Southend defence.

Lennon could have doubled the lead in the 19th minute but his effort was blocked by Barrett and his rebound flew over the bar. Flahavan had to be down smartly at the feet of Stalteri, and the goalkeeper then saved at his near post on the half-hour mark from a Lee shot. Spurs had a tame penalty shout turned down when the ball struck Campbell-Ryce, but they almost doubled the lead with seven minutes remaining in the half but Flahavan tipped Keane's chip onto the crossbar.

Jenas thought he should have had a penalty when Barrett appeared to haul him down, but Rob Styles waved play on. Styles booked Ghaly for blocking a free-kick. Ghaly then crossed for Keane on the stroke of half-time but the Republic of Ireland striker's first-time volley cleared the crossbar.

Jenas doubled the lead in the 49th minute but the goal was splendidly created by Lennon. The England winger flew past Lewis Hunt before twisting and turning his way beyond Campbell-Ryce, with Jenas scuffing the cross in.

Kevin Maher could have reduced the deficit two minutes later but Cerny tipped over his powerful effort.

Lennon's pace created another chance, on the hour mark, but Keane's stabbed effort was deflected wide. Southend were handed a lifeline when Ghaly handled in the area, with Eastwood scoring the penalty.

Keane fired a shot over the bar after a run which took him into the area, and he was booked shortly after for dissent. Mido restored the twogoal lead with a finish off the underside of the crossbar after Lennon had crossed, this time from the right.
