Follow me up to Carlow
Valerie Shanley

THINK country house and the image that comes to mind is of a grand period residence dating back a century or more. The 21st-century equivalent is not short on character or panache either, as Ardristan House clearly shows.

This is a four-bed property where a blend of natural materials along with the latest in contemporary design fittings contribute to a rather chic interior. Generous space is a feature here, at almost 300 sq m (3,230 sq ft), as are smart technology and insulation grades in keeping with new energy guidelines.

The cool, modern feel is there from the start in the large reception hall, which soars double-height to the wooden ceilings.

Leading from here is a wonderfully bright, open-plan living room with windows and French doors opening to the southerly timber deck.

As in the hall, the ceiling is double height, with additional light streaming down from Velux roof windows. This room is essentially the heart of the house, with three distinct areas for relaxing, dining and cooking, and creating the ideal family living space.

A quiet study nearby has a French door to the garden, while the separate playroom/den ensures the living room is toy-free.

A feature of the living room is the gently undulating wall of the gallery landing overhead.

As you would expect in a house of this design and scale, the master bedroom has its own private bathroom.

There are two further bedrooms, while the ceilings in the main bathroom extend to the eaves giving additional character.

For guests, there is a bedroom suite. To the front is a gravelled courtyard, with large garage to the side. The rear gardens are very private with the sun drenched, sheltered deck providing additional dining for al fresco meals come summer.
